Materials Engineering Technology FAT

Today I had my Materials Engineering Technology Term End Exam(Final Assessment Test). I have started studying for the exam from yesterday afternoon to be exact. But I could complete reading all the syllabus except one topic because I had prepared for my Internal Exams and wrote them well.

I started half an hour before 9:00 AM from the room and reached Technology Tower(TT) 15 minutes before the start of exam. From there it took me 5 minutes to board onto a lift and so I was 10 minutes before the exam and was waiting near the examination hall. I took all my stationary and went and sat on the bench designated for me.

Exam started as usual and a junior(Now 2nd year) sat beside me. I don't know whether I can write his name here but I wanted to share with you guys his mentality. His name is Kavindra Singh, I saw this on his Id card, when he was using the same instead of scale. If you want his photo I will give it to you on request so that you can stay away from him.

As I had all the stationary required for me to complete exam, including sharpener which he didn't have, he asked my permission whether he could use my sharpener. This suddenly reminded me of a quote:
Too much of humbleness is an attribute of a wicked person
After a few minutes he took my extra pen and started writing the exam, might be his ink was over and he was using my pen - I thought. Few hours passed by and just 1 hour before the examination to end(11AM), he kept aside my pen and started writing with his pen. A number of questions ran in my mind. What might be the reason, he had used my pen even if he had ink in his pen?

May be this would have been the reason. I was using  a Cello Gripper, a Ball point pen. In this pen as you can see we cannot say when it will stop, we cannot find the level of ink.
Cello Gripper Ball point pen
As I had two pens, as his ink level was low, he would have thought, if I will give this guy some time to write and if his first pen ink was over then he will use his second pen. After which if my pen ink had gone down then I will have to starve for getting a pen to complete my exam. So he would have made a plan, that if I will use his pen before he will use it and I will use it till I am confident that I can complete rest of my examination with my pen which had some ink.

And yes my assumption would have been true because he started using his pen when he had hit the last question.

I am sure of what his intention was, but this kind of behavior had given a bad impression.

I am sorry if I am wrong in any aspect and if you know what his intention was and if was good then I will be ready to remove this post.

Anyways after this exam was over I had given my best. If you want to see the question paper then you can see it from below:

Materials Engineering Technology Exam Page 3
And yes being a student at VIT university which had a rule then there should be atleast 50% Higher Order Thinking questions I was not able to attempt all the questions one reason being that I didn't study all the concepts and second being, after I have attempted the required number of questions my mind will not cooperate to me anymore unless otherwise requried.

Rest of the day I saw My Name is Khan Movie on youtube and also Oopiri movie.
I don't know the language of the subtitles but I do know the language which the Hero speaks.
I liked the movie a lot.

This is what my day had been.

Disclaimer: I don't think that there is anything offensive in this post. I just have added some of my opinions and thoughts, but if you don't like it then we can discuss and if I am wrong, the part which you think offensive will be removed. And if you are Kavindra Singh, I would first like to ask you to comment in the comment box below the thought which you had today. If you are right then I will remove the part about you. Please take everything in a positive way.

Thank you, Have a pleasant day.

Thermal Engineering Systems Exam

Today is the first day of our Term End Examinations(Final Assessment Test) for my 6th semester at VIT University. My subject is Thermal Engineering Systems.

I have started studying for this exam two days ago as many of my friends told me that it is one of the toughest subject a mechanical Engineer will face. And yes I too felt the toughness of the question paper. Even though I was confident before I went into the examination hall, my confidence was shattered after I have received the question paper.

I tried my level best. After my exam was over I asked my friend, Sai Ram, how he had done. I saw a smile on his face and understood that he had done well. I don't know the reason for his confidence. There may be two reasons. One reason might be that, he would have performed well really when not compared to others. Other reason might be that he would have performed well when compared to others. Anyways I am not concerned about his performance in the exam.

I tried attempting each and every question in the question paper. Only one question was out of the concepts which I had learned. All the others were within the concept, but as it was the first exam and being motivated that the question paper will be tough, I was not able to solve any question perfectly except one question. And one question 6a, I have solved the same example problem two days ago. But when I tried to solve the question in the examination my mind didn't respond and was just taking the input and didn't give any output. Just like a computer which gets freezed. This was because it took me around 2 hours for me to solve just two questions and I was left with 1 hour.

Thermal Engineering Systems FAT Question Paper - Page 2
At one point of time after the exam I wanted to stop studying these subjects and do something on which I had. But a simple question was, if I was not able to face a small problem in my life, then can I handle the problems which  I will face in the future doing something else? May be no. So I decided to challenge myself to take all the exams and face each and every question paper. Putting the effort is my part and the results are left to the GOD. May be god will give me good results in this exam.

Afternoon I evaluated myself whether I had learned anything completing this subject. I can say yes. This exam is not going to decide my future.

At the end of Thermal Engineering systems I would like to share, the basic principle of refrigeration. Before I will tell you, there are a few things which you should know about.

When air is expanded from high pressure to low pressure it cools down. Also it gains more velocity.

Similarly when the air is compressed from low pressure to high pressure it gains some temperature.

We can cool air without changing its pressure, but when the pressure is constant when cooling, also called as isobaric process, the volume of the air decreases.

These points are valid for any fluid which can be used as refrigerant.

I think this is sufficient and we can add few other points if necessary in the description. Now see the following image:
Refrigeration Cycle
Before we continue, for now forget about the Air conditioner and the Refrigerator you use in your home.

We will start with the compressor. Now here the pressure of the air is increased and as we know the temperature also increases. Now to reduce the temperature we will send it through the condenser and the temperature of the air is reduced. This will be slightly greater than the room temperature. Now as the pressure is high we can cool the same air by expanding it so that the temperature still reduces. We do the same in expander. We send the air through the evaporator which is a high temperature body, as the air is at a lower temperature air grabs some heat from the evaporator and then goes back to compressor and the cycle continues.

Coming back to real world Evaporator is the room in which summer air conditioning is installed. The air coming from the expander cools the room and goes back to the compressor and then to the condenser. The same principle is used but in a different way depending on the requirements.

Now a days instead of using air, manufacturers are using some refrigerants which are better useful in this cycle when compared to ordinary air. There are some important properties which govern their usage which are out of the scope of this post.

Finally thanks for reading on. Hope you had some fun reading my post.

If you can solve or have solved the above question paper then you can post your solution in the comment box below.

You can also add some Thermal Engineering System related concepts in the comment box below if you want to.

Have a nice day!

My Design Project at VIT University

I have completed my design project final review today. First of all thanks to Mallikarjuna Reddy D sir, Professor belonging to Department of Design and Automation(SMEC) at VIT University.
D Mallikarjuna Reddy(SMEC)
This is my first post on this blog, I wanted to write somewhere on the internet about my Design Project so that I can remember this event in my life at any point of time. I am writing this post wholeheartedly. If you have any comment please feel free to discuss.

At my university every Mechanical Engineering Student will have to do a design project to become a Mechanical Engineer😛. So I have selected Design Project during my 6th semester(3rd Year). Because there are no particular number of seats allotted to particular faculty and thus my course was approved. This was a two credit course.
Design Project Course Approved
As I was really interested in Airplanes I chose Design of Aircraft Wing as my topic along with two other people Yeshwanth Kumar and Krishna Reddy as my group mates. I also went to Deepa mam and asked her whether she would be interested to be our internal guide. She accepted our request and we started off.

Our External Reviewer was Mallikarjuna Reddy. Soon after a few days I got a mail stating that we will be having our first review. I started preparing the report for our Review 1 and to be frank I just have read two to three articles on internet and used my previous knowledge on Aircrafts and completed the report.

Report 1. I used my Tex Skills to prepare the report and the output was awesome.

Review 1: On this day Krishna Reddy went to Deepa Madam and asked her what had to be included in the report so that in case if I have missed anything then I(we) can add it. She asked us to add some design data like what load we will be taking for our analysis and other parameters. I have made changes accordingly and we(Me and Krishna Reddy, Yeshwant went home for some reason) went to our reviewer. He just asked us a few questions like "What is the project?", "Why did we select this project?", "what will be our approach?" and some basic questions. He also told us that it is very hard to design an airfoil, and so we can download a airfoil and make some analysis. Finally he asked us to sign on a sheet and our Review1 was over.

Review 2: Actually we had these reviews, so that each time we had a review we will atleast do some work and at the end we will complete the project . So the required component in the report was that we had to show we had done some work. Until the day before the review I didn't knew what to do, because I also had Hardware project which has a different story. Finally the two other group mates searched a model on internet and found B737 wing. As I was good at Solidworks I added some forces and made simulation. This time Krishna Reddy prepared the report and they added the simulation results which I have generated. When we went to our reviewer his first question was,"What have you guys done?". Obviously it was my part to answer the question because the other two didn't knew anything about these concepts. I have explained him each and everything in the report using a Power Point Presentation and as he was satisfied with the work we have done. He said "Okay, you guys have done something.". I don't know whether other batches have done these kind of simulation but the sentence was really encouraging for me. I felt very happy for his encouragement and I wanted to do more for my final review. As we have added B737-8 which had a winglet, he asked us,"Why there is a need for winglet". Again I answered him with the turbulence and few other things which I had learnt seeing A380(My favorite Aircraft), B747, Air crash Investigation documentaries. He was satisfied, we signed on the attendance sheet and the design review 2 was over.

Report 2. Krishna Reddy simply copied everything from internet and from the previous report. His argument was that we had to add same thing from the previous report to make it a continuation for the next report.

Review 3(Today): As this was my final review Krishna Reddy and Yeswanth were worried and started asking me about this review 3-4 days before the review. Recently I have leaned Ansys in my CAD/CAM lab and I wanted to apply the concept to do flow analysis for the wing as we have already done Structural Analysis in the previous Review. I started searching on Youtube for Ansys Flow Simulation tutorials and found many. One of them was Fluent Ansys Analysis. I followed this tutorial and everything went fine until at the end the solidworks file of B737-8 wing was meshed and the fluent raised an error saying that I have exceeded the number of fluid cells. Because I was using a student version I had no other option but to make some changes in my design and meshing procedure to get the solution. Finally I tried doing the analysis in Solidworks but I didn't knew that it will take time for the system to generate the solution and I thought that this design will not work and I will have to redesign a new wing. And so I searched for the same and found  Ep.1 - How to build a wing in solidworks starting from coordinates. Finally I created two air foils using this tutorials and for one air foil I got solution using Ansys and for the other I had to get the solution using Solidworks because I was using Ansys Student. Again this time Krishna Reddy and Yeshwanth made the report and poster required for the review and we went to meet D Mallikarjuna Reddy Sir. He asked us to come to Design of machine Elements Lab(above Souvenir Shop). We went there and he asked us to just show the report so that he can ask us some questions regarding our project. His first question was, "What have you done till now?". Soon I gave a reply showing the NACA data that I(we) have designed the Aircraft wing. He was amused(may be) with my(our) work because what he thought was not possible for beginners(atleast for some students in our college) have been accomplished. I also showed him the velocity Streamlines, Pressure on Wing, Vorticity and few other things which I have done. I also explained him about the pattern I have observed. Actually when a streamline flows, at the start of the wing the velocity is reduced(because it is obstructed by an obstacle) after that at the wing surface the streamline again gains speed and at the end again there will be a reduction in the speed where the flaps are placed. I also told him that this might be the cause for the turbulence and vorticity. He really did like the effort I had put and he again encouraged me. This professor is really a great guy. Not because he had encouraged me, but if he hadn't encouraged me during the second review I wouldn't even have designed the air foil.

Velocity streamlines over a wing(NACA2408)
He also encouraged me(us) that we had done some work and if we can do some more effort then we can publish a research paper. This encouragement really made me happy and I really felt confident.

I think this kind of professors are really important for each and every student in their life. By using the term student means not the people who are just awaiting for the degree but are here to get some concept before they go out.

I will blog another post with the final project report which I have submitted to the reviewer so that it will not get messed up with this post.
